Family Life

OneMoreQuilt FlagOneMoreQuilt FlagWhat a great gift.  A flag!!!

We have a large double flagpole in our front yard.  I have always liked being able to fly our country's colors.  We also have an Illinois State Flag and a Nascar Flag (which we fly on the weekends while watching the racesWink).

Happy Valentine's Day

I hope you have a very Happy Valentine's Day.  We had a great day at school.  We made a project, decorated treat bags, graphed candy hearts for math etc.  In the afternoon we had a party.

I love the enthusiasm of second graders.  Every little Valentine is special, every piece of candy an important treat.

My husband and I will spend a quiet evening together.  Our dinner is almost done,  our "shows" will be on soon.

Happy Valentine's Day.
Happy quilting,

The Little Things

Little things make me happy.  I got a new cover for my ironing board today.  I have an extra wide ironing board and had a little bit of trouble finding a new cover to fit.  I found the right sized one at Bed, Bath and Beyond and picked it up today.  It is amazing how big of a difference something so minor makes!  I think the whole room looks happier!!!

Happy New Year

I wish each and everyone of you a Happy New Year.  I hope you have a happy, healthy, prosperous 2011.

The beginning of the new year always brings a sense of renewal.  An opportunity to start fresh in certain areas of our lives and not fret over what is past.  I have only one New Year's Resolution this year.  My resolution is to be/do more.  I figure there is always room for improvement and if I improve a little bit in several areas, I will have a very good year.

Feeling Better

I finally feel better!!!  I finished my book (worth reading, by the way) and felt good enough to start getting my house back in order.  The dishes are done, a couple of loads of laundry are done and I actually cooked regular food (a change from applesauce, soup and crackers).  Everybody in my family is recovering nicely too.

Let It Snow!

The snow has started to fall.  We are supposed to get a couple of inches before morning.  Winter has certainly arrived.  The temperature has been in the teens for a week now.  I'm not one for spending too much time outside in the cold but from the inside looking out.....the snow is pretty!  It makes everything look clean and sparkly.

I was working in my studio.  My husband came in to say goodnight before going to bed after a long day.  I heard him go into the bedroom then I heard,  "Oh yes!!!"   "Thank you."  I smiled.

Silver Lining

My mother was the most wonderful person in the world.  She always found the good in people and situations.  She would often remind us that "every cloud has a silver lining" and we should try our best to find it.  She didn't just say it, she meant it.  She always found something nice to say and was always doing for others.

Since our economy took a nose dive (the cloud), I have been noticing people coming together, being a little kinder, helping each other a bit more and finding ways to make do with what they have (the silver lining).

It seems that the frugal attitude is also finding its way back into quilting more than ever.  I have noticed more and more scrappy patterns, crazy blocks, string quilts and selvage blocks (more of that silver lining).

Wedding Signature Quilt

This was a great day.  My husband and I just returned from our son's engagement party.

They had a wonderful turnout.  Family, friends and co-workers came together to celebrate their engagement.  I feel very fortunate because my husband and I get along with our future daughter-in-law's parents.  Everybody was happy.  Everybody had a good time.  The weather was good and the food was great.

I feel another quilt, or two, or three coming on.  The bride-to-be seems very excited about a signature quilt from the guests at the wedding, and this, of course, makes me very happy.  She loves fall colors and I have some great fabrics to choose from to make the sashings, borders and backing for the quilt.

Anniversary Signature Quilt

I was speaking with one of my quilters today.  I called her to let her know that the two quilts she had dropped off were finished and ready to be picked up.  We've known each other for awhile and spoke on a variety of topics.  In the course of the conversation she told me about the plans she is making for the celebration of her (and her husband's) 50th Wedding Anniversary.

Of course, I asked if she was planning to make a signature quilt!!!  She was not exactly sure what a signature quilt was but said she wanted to know more  so I explained it the best I could and gave her a few ideas.  I also suggested that she consider adding a photograph or two to the quilt.  Maybe a wedding photo, an anniversary photo or both.

Labor Day

I hope you have a wonderful weekend.  I love Labor Day.  I like the fact that we celebrate a day that recognizes all of the people who work hard or have worked hard.  The three-day weekend doesn't hurt either!!!  My daughter and grandson are visiting and I'm enjoying every minute of it.  Even chores go better when I have my little helper around.
